India BIS certification

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the competent authority responsible for product certification and the only product certification authority in India. It was officially established in 1987.

Meity, the abbreviation of the electronic information technology department, is responsible for issuing the decree on electronic and information technology products, and is also responsible for the review of product certification within the scope of CRS.

BIS certificate is issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards, and the purpose of certification is to provide users with products with safety and quality assurance. In principle, BIS product certification is voluntary. However, for various reasons, the government began to implement compulsory certification requirements for some categories of products. For products within the scope of compulsory certification, the manufacturer or importer of the products must first apply to the Indian Bureau of standards for grant of licence before they can enter the Indian market for sales.

BIS certification is divided into two categories: BIS certification and CRS certification.

ISI certification covers a wide range of products, including textiles, chemicals, cement, building materials, mechanical equipment, farm produce, food and beverage, etc. the most significant feature of ISI certification is the need to review the factory.

CRS certification mainly focuses on electronic and information technology products, including batteries and cells, household appliances, computer accessories, luminaries, etc. Applicants of relevant products need to send samples to the recognized Indian Laboratory for testing and obtain the test report, and then complete the application on the CRS portal. After being granted by the granting officer, they can obtain the licence. This certification does not require factory review.
