The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued the 2020 information standard for consumer goods (products containing button / coin batteries) to reduce the risk of dangerous death and injury caused by the use of button batteries, as these items may be swallowed by children, resulting in injury or even death. The provisions of the standard shall be enforced from June 22, 2022. This means that button batteries or products containing button batteries must comply with this standard in order to enter the Australian market.

However, if the product is first provided to the consumer before the enforcement of the regulation, or the product is a one-off supply by the supplier who purchases the product as a consumer, such product is not subject to the standard.

The requirements of the standard include warning signs that must be attached to the product, instructions and packaging (if any), so as to inform consumers that the product contains items that may cause serious injury and may have serious consequences if swallowed or placed in any part of the body.
